This book was written because the term "grazing occultation" seldom appears in astronomy texts 45 years after the field was started. It is my purpose to help open the door to the amateur and professional astronomer who wish to do some valuable work and make a genuine contribution to science. It is not a crowded field nor is it expected to be. In contrast, it needs new people with new ideas all the time and in greater numbers. It is a field where the observer can see the fruits of his labors fairly quickly in the form of reduction of his work.
Grazing occultation work is one of the few fields left in astronomy where the participants need only need a minimum of mathematics to do an excellent job from the observation standpoint.
